How to Clear the Cache and Cookies in Chrome

Why do we need to Clear Cache and Cookies?
Clearing the cache and cookies from your web browser is a critical troubleshooting step for resolving internet browsing issues, such as errors on websites like Banner. The cache stores parts of web pages to make them load faster on future visits. However, when a website updates, the cached data might not match the new content, leading to problems like incorrect page loading or outdated information being displayed. Cookies, which track your website visits, can also cause similar issues. By clearing your cache and cookies, you give your browser a clean slate, removing any old or conflicting data. This ensures you are viewing the most current version of websites, free from errors caused by mismatches between cached content and the site's current state. Essentially, this process helps ensure that browsing problems you're experiencing are not due to outdated information stored by your browser, making it a fundamental step in internet troubleshooting.

        IMPORTANT:
Close/quit the browser after clearing the cache and cookies.

  1. Click on the three dots in the top right corner of the Chrome browser window.
    Select "Settings".

  2. In the menu displayed on the left-hand side, please select the "Privacy and security" option, then proceed to select "Clear browser data".

  3. In the "Time range" field, please select the "All time" option and ensure that all check marks in the "Basic" section are selected.

  4. Please select the "Advanced" option and ensure all checkboxes in this area are chosen. It's important to note that checking "Password and passkeys" will erase all saved passwords in your browser. For security reasons, the ITS department advises against saving passwords in the browser.

  5. Once selected, proceed to click on the "Clear data" option. Depending on the information stored, the process may take seconds or minutes. It's always crucial that after clearing your browser's data, you close and reopen it to reflect these changes.
